Material Handling application

Description

Advanced, state-of-the-art machines require synchronized motion sequences. This example shows the feeder of a sheet-fed printing machine which supplies the printing material (such as paper) to the machine. A stacker places a stack of paper into the tray of the feeder. This stack must tSchneider Electric provides a whole range of different control and drive systems which are all programmed with the same software package. All tasks described above are programmed under IEC61131-3. These languages are complemented by PLCopen function modules and Application Function Blocks (Flying blade, Rotary knife, Grouping/ungrouping, Clamping). The Schneider Electric software also offers, among other things, the graphic editors as well as trace and debugging functions the user expects from a modern design tool.

The hardware depends on the machine requirements. A Lexium Motion Controller, a Lexium 05 servo drive and the suitable servo motors make up a complete solution with an excellent price/performance ratio. This solution is completely based on international standards.
Schneider Electric intelligent integrated drives ILS perform the positioning movements; hen be positioned in such a way that each sheet can be supplied to the printing machine. An elevator system lifts the paper stack so that the first sheet can be separately drawn in by the corresponding unit (not shown) and transferred to the feeder table as a single sheet. After the top sheet is aligned (front and side edge), the sheet gripper grips it, accelerates it to the circumferential speed of the impression cylinder and transfers the sheet during the rotation to the gripper of the feeder cylinder. All additional transfers to further cylinders and to the second impression cylinder are performed by gripped systems. This ensures high-precision multi-color printing.

Motion control challenges

The motion controller must meet two requirements. On the one hand, it must control simple positioning sequences (point-to-point positioning) which position the stack. The stack elevator and the separation unit also require synchronous positioning with reference to the machine cycle.
In addition, high-synchronicity movements are required which are all synchronized with a master axis (real or virtual master axis).
Usually, a cam profile which is synchronous with the master axis is implemented for the swing unit. All other cylinders and rollers (such as feed cylinder and impression cylinder) are synchronized with the master axis in terms of angle. Since this synchronicity is paramount for the printing quality, the accuracy demands on synchronicity and cycle times in the drive are extremely high.

Schneider Electric provides a whole range of different control and drive systems which are all programmed with the same software package. All tasks described above are programmed under IEC61131-3. These languages are complemented by PLCopen function modules and Application Function Blocks (Flying blade, Rotary knife, Grouping/ungrouping, Clamping). Schneider Electric intelligent Lexium integrated drives ILS perform the positioning movements; they are controlled via CANopen. Integrated drives are available in three motor technologies: stepper motor technology, brushless DC motor technology and AC servo motor technology.
All highly synchronous axes such as cam disks and constant velocity are implemented with Lexium 05 servo drive via the cyclic synchronous position mode according to CiA DS402 (CANopen Motionbus). The servo motors suitable for the mechanical system with the corresponding encoders meet all the requirements of the latest generation of machines.
