Flying Saw Application

Description

If a continuous flow of material must not be interrupted while the material is being processed, a special motion sequence is required. During this, the processing axis and the material speed must be synchronized, while after processing the axis must return to its initial position.

Motion control challenges

A master axis moves at a specific speed. A slave axis is to synchronize its speed with the master axis. At a given point in time, the slave axis must have reached the speed of the master axis and then move along with it in full synchronicity until the processing procedure is complete. The slave must always be able to compensate for any speed changes of the master at any time. After the synchronous motion, the slave is decelerated and moves back to its initial position. After that it is ready to be synchronized with the master again.

Solution
Schneider Electric provides a complete, optimized solution on the basis of the Lexium Motion Controller (LMC) and the Lexium 05  or Lexium 15. Application function blocks considerably reduce the programming time and improve the machine performance. The functions blocks provided for the software solution include flying saw, rotary knife, grouping/ungrouping and clamping with torque control. The application function block flying saw used in this example allows for the synchronization on the fly of a linear axis with a master axis to enable uninterrupted functions such as cutting, filling, labeling or dosing on the fly.
